DPI, Guyana, Monday, August 6, 2018

Twenty-six youths are being encouraged to keep an open mind as they embark on the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Youth in Natural Resources Apprenticeship Programme 2018.

The program, which is in its second year, runs over a three-week period with youths from all across the region participating. They will be awarded opportunities to learn about the country’s natural resources sector, job opportunities and gather experience in hinterland regions.

Minister of Natural Resources Hon. Raphael Trotman M.P, addressing the apprentices

Raphael Trotman, Minister of Natural Resources, expressed his hope that during the course of the programme the youths “see the natural resources sector as being something that is a worthy endeavour.”

“We hear about the …mud and sand and noise and grease but it is a worthy endeavour. It just has to be done correctly.” He added “it has to be done in a way that you respect the people that live in the hinterlands,” explaining mining activities should not result in the pollution of their water supplies and that people passing through hinterland communities have consideration for the occupants.

“On the one hand, we want you to love your country and on the other we want you to appreciate that mining and forestry…drilling for oil and exploring and developing oil wealth, all of these are healthy and good endeavours.”

He reminded them that “people who live in the hinterland, who live in the coast, those who work in a mine, or those who work at a forest station each of us has an important place in the development of this country.”

Youths who participated in last year’s programme shared some of their experiences with the new batch and urged them to “keep an open mind” and to “be bold, brave and enjoy your new journey”.
